How the Day Actually Runs
Four stages, 16 to 17 hours door to door on the listing, and one rule that matters: bring your passport.
Pickup Before Dawn
The day starts with an early-morning hotel pickup in Hurghada (the operator sends the time by WhatsApp or email the day before) for the flight to Cairo. Book with the names exactly as in your passports, and carry your passport: the flight will not board you without it.
A Little Over an Hour in the Air
The listing allows 75 to 80 minutes for the flight from Hurghada (HRG) to Cairo (CAI), against five to six hours by road each way. A representative meets you outside arrivals in Cairo with a sign, and the Egyptologist guide takes over for the day.
Giza, the Sphinx and a Museum
About two and a half hours on the Giza plateau with the Panorama Point and the Sphinx, lunch at a restaurant facing the pyramids, and the museum you chose at booking. The burial chambers of Khufu and Khafre are not included; that is a separate ticket.
Evening Flight Back
The guide takes you back to Cairo airport for the evening flight, and a driver returns you to your Hurghada hotel late at night. The order of the visits can change with flight times and Cairo traffic.

The Guide
Cairo from Hurghada in a Day: What It Really Takes
Plane or bus, how long you get at Giza, which museum, what the tickets cost, and when two days beat one.
A Cairo day trip from Hurghada is a day of 16 to 20 hours: a pickup in the middle of the night, about 465 km to Giza by road or a little over an hour by plane, then the pyramids, the Sphinx, a museum and lunch, and back to your Red Sea hotel late at night. It is long, it is not cheap if you fly, and for most people who have never seen the pyramids it is the best day of the holiday. This page sets out the choices honestly, with the prices as listed in October 2026.

Where things stand (October 2026)
- The Grand Egyptian Museum is open, fully since 4 November 2025, with the whole Tutankhamun collection. Most of the popular day trips from Hurghada now let you choose it, or the old Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square, when you book. Its foreign adult ticket rises to EGP 1,830 on 1 November 2026.
- Giza has a new entrance. Since April 2025 visitors enter from the Fayoum road side and ride electric shuttles between the stops; tour coaches no longer drive onto the plateau.
- The season is starting. Searches for this trip peak in January, and the cooler months from November to March are the comfortable ones: Cairo averages about 19 °C at midday in January against 35 °C in July.
By plane or by bus?
The flight trip is the one to book if the budget allows it. Cairo Day Trip by Flight with the Pyramids, Sphinx and Museum is from $268 a person, rated 4.9 from 4,315 reviews, and it gathers more new reviews each week than any other Cairo trip from Hurghada on GetYourGuide (checked October 2026). A flight of about 75 to 80 minutes each way replaces five to six hours on the road, and the listing puts the whole day at 16 to 17 hours: more of it at Giza, less of it asleep in a coach. You choose the Grand Egyptian Museum or the old Egyptian Museum when you book, and lunch is at a restaurant facing the pyramids.
The bus trips cost about a quarter as much and see the same sights. The one with the most new reviews, Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum by Bus, is from $49 a person in current promotion (usually $62), rated 4.9 from 1,321 reviews. It visits the Grand Egyptian Museum or, if you choose it, the royal mummies at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. The price of that saving is a pickup in the middle of the night (around 2 a.m. on several bus listings), about six hours on the road each way and a return around midnight. Our plane or bus guide compares the two hour by hour.
What you see in one day
Every Cairo day trip from Hurghada is built on the same three stops:
- The Giza pyramids and the Sphinx, about two to three hours, including the panoramic viewpoint where all three pyramids line up.
- A museum, usually the Grand Egyptian Museum next to the plateau, sometimes the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir. The museum guide explains the difference and which trips include which.
- Lunch near Giza.
Some trips add a Nile boat ride (usually at extra cost) or the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, and many itineraries include a papyrus, perfume or craft workshop stop, which is a sales stop. What one day cannot fit: Saqqara, the Citadel, Coptic Cairo, or anything at a slow pace. If you want those, stay a night.
How much does a Cairo day trip from Hurghada cost?
On GetYourGuide in October 2026, a bus or minibus day trip costs from about $49 in current promotion (usually $62) a person, a flight day trip from about $268, and a two-day trip with a night in Giza from about $303 in current promotion (usually $336). Read what the price covers: the flight trips include the Giza plateau and museum tickets, while on several bus trips the entry tickets are an option you add at booking, so the lowest price shown is without them. Going inside a pyramid is extra on every trip, and the sites take cards, not cash, for tickets bought on the day.
Going inside the pyramids
It is a separate ticket bought at the plateau. A foreign adult pays EGP 700 for the plateau itself, and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities lists EGP 1,000 for the inside of the Great Pyramid and EGP 280 for the Pyramid of Menkaure (checked October 2026). For most day trippers it is not worth it: the climb is steep and hot, and the King’s Chamber is an empty granite room. The Giza tickets guide explains who it is for.
Is the day trip worth it?
For a first visit to Egypt from a Red Sea resort, yes. It is not worth it with small children, in the heat of July and August if you struggle in heat, or if you are coming back to Egypt and can start in Cairo next time. The honest verdict goes through who should go and who should skip it, and the safety guide covers the night drive, touts at Giza and the passport you must not forget.
Where to stay if you make it two days
A night in Cairo turns one very long day into two easy ones. For a pyramids trip, stay in Giza, where hotels around the plateau look straight at the pyramids; for the city, Downtown by Tahrir Square or the Nile island of Zamalek.
Giza, facing the pyramids
Wake up beside the plateau; quiet at night, an hour from the old city.
Downtown, by Tahrir Square
Central and lively, next to the Egyptian Museum and the Nile.
Zamalek, on the Nile
The leafy island neighbourhood, with cafés and Nile-view rooms.
With a free morning in the city, Cairo’s tip-based walking tours are on GuruWalk, free to book. The overnight guide compares the areas and the two-day tours.

Before you book
- Passport: take it. You need it for the flight and at the road checkpoints.
- Cash: small notes for tips, toilets and anything extra at Giza.
- Clothes: light layers that cover shoulders and knees, a hat, and shoes for sand.
- Sleep: the night before matters more than any other part of the plan.
Giza and Back in a Day, Without Twelve Hours on the Road
The flight day trip swaps the 930 km round drive for two short flights, which leaves time on the ground for the pyramids, the Sphinx, a museum and lunch. It gathers more new reviews each week than any other Cairo trip from Hurghada on GetYourGuide (October 2026). Starting from $268 per person.

Cairo Day Trip from Hurghada FAQ
The questions people ask before booking the pyramids trip from the Red Sea, answered in the first sentence.
From about US$49 a person by bus and US$268 by plane, on GetYourGuide in October 2026. The pyramids and Grand Egyptian Museum bus trip is the value pick; the flight day trip buys more time in Cairo. See plane or bus.
No: Giza is about 465 km from Hurghada by road, five to six hours each way, or a little over an hour by plane. That is why the day trips leave in the middle of the night; the flight day trip cuts the travel to two short flights.
A little over an hour: the day-trip listings allow 60 to 80 minutes in the air. Add airport time and about an hour by road from Cairo airport to Giza; the flight day trip includes the flights, the transfers and a guide.
By plane if you can afford it: you trade about ten hours on the road for two short flights and more time at Giza. By bus costs about a quarter as much and sees the same sights, with a pickup around 2 a.m. and a late-night return; the comparison sets out the hours.
Yes for most first-time visitors to Egypt: it is a day of 16 to 20 hours, and it is the only way to see Giza without changing your holiday. Skip it with small children or in high summer if heat is hard for you; the honest verdict has the detail.
Most of the popular trips now do, but check the listing: "Grand Egyptian Museum" or "GEM" is the new museum by the pyramids, "Egyptian Museum" alone usually means Tahrir. The bus trip with the GEM includes the ticket; see the museum guide.
The Giza plateau ticket is included on the main trips; going inside a pyramid is not. The inside of the Great Pyramid is a separate ticket at the site (EGP 1,000 for a foreign adult on the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities site, October 2026); the tickets guide lists every price.
Yes, with an extra ticket bought at the plateau, if your guide has time in the schedule. A trip that builds it in, such as Inside Khufu Pyramid, Old Cairo and the bazaar, saves arranging it on the day.
In the middle of the night: several bus trips pick up around 2 a.m. and return late at night; flight trips pick up early in the morning for the flight. Your exact pickup time comes from the operator after booking; the early-start guide has tips.
Yes: Cairo, Giza and Hurghada are outside the areas the UK Foreign Office advises against visiting, and the trip runs daily with licensed operators. The real issues are the night drive, touts at Giza and the heat; see the safety guide.
Yes: you need it for the domestic flight and at the police checkpoints on the road. If it is in the hotel safe or with reception, collect it the evening before; the visa you bought in Hurghada covers Cairo.
If you have two days, yes: one night turns a day of 16 to 20 hours into two unhurried ones, with time for the old city. The two-day tour with a pyramids view stay includes the hotel; the overnight guide compares areas to stay.
November to March: Cairo averages about 19 °C at midday in January against 35 °C in July. It is the busy season, so book the flight day trip or the bus a few days ahead.
