How long is the flight from Hurghada to Cairo?

A little over an hour: the flight day trips allow 60 to 80 minutes in the air between Hurghada (HRG) and Cairo (CAI), on a morning flight out and an evening flight back. The operator books the seats, so book with your names exactly as in your passports. The airport time is the hidden cost: check-in before the flight, the transfer from Cairo airport to Giza, which is about an hour by road through the city, and the same in reverse. Even so, the flight trips give you more time on the ground than the bus.

Can you fly from Hurghada to the pyramids?

Not directly: you fly to Cairo International Airport, on the north-east side of the city, and then drive across Cairo to Giza. On a flight day trip the guide meets you at arrivals with a vehicle, so you never deal with the city traffic yourself.

The bus: what the long road actually means

The road is about 465 km: north along the Red Sea coast and the Gulf of Suez to Ain Sokhna, then west across the desert into Cairo. The bus listings allow about six hours each way, with rest stops and security checkpoints, which is why several of them pick you up around 2 a.m. and bring you back late at night. The good news is that you sleep through most of it on the way out. The bad news is the way back, after a day of walking in the sun. Bring a neck pillow and a warm layer: coach air conditioning is cold at night.

The bus trips are not a lesser version of the day: they see the same pyramids, the same Sphinx and, on the one we would pick, the Grand Egyptian Museum. What you give up is time at the sites and a night’s sleep, and most bus itineraries also include a papyrus or craft workshop stop.
