Cairo Overnight or a Same-Day Return?
Should you stay a night in Cairo on a trip from Hurghada? Same day vs overnight, two-day tours, and where to stay: pyramid-view Giza, Downtown or Zamalek. Checked October 2026.
If you can spare two days, stay the night: the same-day trip by bus spends about twelve hours on the road for six or seven hours in Cairo, and one night turns that into two unhurried days. The easiest way is a two-day tour from Hurghada with the night included, such as Hurghada: Cairo 2-Day Tour with a Pyramids View Stay, from $303 a person in current promotion (usually $336), rated 4.7 from 70 reviews (checked October 2026): the bus both ways, the Giza plateau and the Grand Egyptian Museum with their entrance fees, an Egyptologist guide, breakfast and lunch, and a night in a private apartment with a view of the pyramids (an apartment, not a hotel; groups of up to 8). If you would rather choose your own hotel, the areas below are the three that make sense, with a hotel search for each.

Same day or overnight: the trade
| Same-day trip | One night in Cairo | |
|---|---|---|
| Time on the road or in the air | About 12 hours by bus, or about 5 hours of flights and transfers by plane | The same total, split over two days |
| Time in Cairo | About 6 to 8 hours | Most of two days |
| What fits | Giza, the Sphinx, one museum, lunch | Giza, the Sphinx, a museum, Islamic or Coptic Cairo, Khan el-Khalili, the Nile |
| Sleep | You lose a night | You keep it |
| Best for | Seeing the pyramids once, on a tight holiday | First-time visitors who want Cairo, not only Giza |
The same-day trip is the right call when Cairo is one day out of a beach week. The overnight is the right call when you would otherwise be choosing between the Grand Egyptian Museum and the old city, or when you are travelling with children for whom a 2 a.m. start and a midnight return is a lot. Our plane or bus guide has the hours for each format.

Where to stay for one night

Giza, by the pyramids
The choice for a pyramids trip. Hotels with pyramid views cluster around the plateau, from the historic Marriott Mena House beside the Great Pyramid to the Steigenberger Pyramids and the small guesthouses of Nazlet El-Semman by the Sphinx, many with roof terraces that look straight at the plateau. You wake up next to the site, which suits an early start on the second morning. The trade-off: the area is quiet at night and the old city is 45 minutes to an hour away by road.
Downtown, by Tahrir Square
Central and busy, with the old Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square, the Nile corniche and the metro on the doorstep, and the widest range of prices. Giza is about 16 km away, a 30 to 45 minute drive outside rush hour. Choose it if the second day is about the museum in Tahrir and the old city.
Zamalek, on the Nile island
The leafy island in the middle of the Nile, with embassies, cafés and Nile-view hotels; quieter than Downtown and easy for a first night in the city. It is a drive to Giza, so it suits a trip where the pyramids are on day one and the city on day two.
Getting there and back on your own
Without a tour, the usual way is a domestic flight from Hurghada (HRG) to Cairo (CAI), about an hour, then a taxi or ride-hailing car to your hotel; Cairo airport to Giza is roughly an hour by road. Long-distance buses also run between Hurghada and Cairo, about five to six hours. The return can be on a different day, which is the whole point: you are not fixed to a tour’s evening flight.
A free walking tour on the second day
If you stay over, Cairo’s free walking tours on GuruWalk are a cheap way to see the old city on the second morning: booking is free and the guides work for tips. See the free walking tours in Cairo on GuruWalk.

Two-day tours from Hurghada
The packaged version takes the planning off your hands: transport both ways, the night, a guide and the entrance tickets. The two-day tour with a pyramids view stay is the most reviewed of them on GetYourGuide, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Its add-ons cover the second day: a Nile dinner cruise, the royal mummies at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, the Citadel of Saladin, or Saqqara, Memphis and Dahshur.
