Is the Cairo Day Trip from Hurghada Worth It?
Is a day trip to the pyramids from Hurghada worth it? What you really see in one day, how long you get at Giza, who should go, who should not, and the alternatives. Checked October 2026.
Yes, for most people on a Red Sea holiday who have never seen the pyramids: it is a long, tiring day (16 to 20 hours on the listings), but it is the only way to stand at Giza without changing your holiday, and the travellers who take it rate it highly. It is not worth it if you are coming back to Egypt, if you are travelling with small children, or if the middle-of-the-night start would wreck the rest of your week. If you go, the flight version trades money for time: Cairo Day Trip by Flight with the Pyramids, Sphinx and Museum is from $268 a person, rated 4.9 from 4,315 reviews (checked October 2026).

Is Hurghada near the pyramids?
No. Hurghada is on the Red Sea coast about 465 km from Giza by road, about six hours each way, or a little over an hour by plane. That distance is the whole question: a Cairo day trip from Hurghada is a day of 16 to 20 hours for six to eight hours in Cairo and Giza.

What you actually see in one day
The core of every Cairo day trip from Hurghada is the same three things:
- The Giza plateau. The three pyramids up close, the panoramic viewpoint where all of them line up, and the Sphinx with its valley temple. Plan on two to three hours.
- A museum. Either the Grand Egyptian Museum, next to the pyramids and home of the full Tutankhamun collection since it opened in November 2025, or the old Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square; most trips let you choose when you book. Check which one your option includes; our Grand Egyptian Museum guide explains the difference.
- Lunch, usually at a restaurant near Giza.
Some trips add a Nile boat ride (usually an extra), the Khan el-Khalili bazaar or Old Cairo, and many itineraries include a papyrus or craft workshop stop. A shop stop is a sales visit: you are free to look and leave. What you will not see in a day: Saqqara, Memphis, the Citadel, Coptic Cairo, or anything at a slow pace.

Who it is worth it for
- First-time visitors who may not come back. If the pyramids are on your life list and Hurghada is the Egypt you have, this is the trip.
- Adults and teenagers who sleep anywhere. The bus trips are kind to people who can sleep in a coach.
- Anyone who books the flight version. It removes most of the road and keeps all of the sights.
Who should skip it
- Families with small children. A 2 a.m. pickup and a midnight return is hard on anyone under ten, and on the parents the next day.
- People coming back to Egypt. A future trip that starts in Cairo will give you Giza, Saqqara and the city properly.
- Anyone in July or August who struggles in heat. Cairo’s average daily high is about 35 °C in July, with little shade on the plateau.
- Travellers with two days to spare. Two days with a night in Giza is a better trip for about the price of the flight day trip; see Cairo overnight or same day.
What the listings warn you about
The operators are frank in the small print. The flight trips say the order of the visits can change with flight times, Cairo traffic and daylight. Several trips need at least six people for a French, Italian, Spanish, Russian or German guide, or you pay for a private guide. The bus listings warn that this is long-distance travel with a lot of walking, and recommend warm clothes for the night drive. None of that is a reason not to go; it is what the day is.
The alternatives from Hurghada
- Luxor instead of Cairo. Luxor is closer, about four hours by road, and a day there covers the Valley of the Kings and Karnak; Luxor day trips are among the most reviewed excursions from Hurghada on GetYourGuide. It is the better day trip if temples and tombs interest you more than the pyramids.
- Two days in Cairo. The overnight version, with a hotel by the pyramids or in the city.
- The flight day trip. If cost is not the deciding factor, it is the version of the day we would choose; the plane or bus guide sets out the hours.
The verdict
Go, if you have never seen the pyramids and Hurghada is your base this time. Book the flight if the budget allows it, the bus if it does not, and do not add the pyramid interior unless being inside is the point of the trip for you (the tickets guide explains why).
